Last time I stayed in Colombo, Sri Lanka I spent the first six nights in a place that didn’t have a swimming pool! So, in desperation I started asking around to see where I might be able to swim and was lucky enough to get to swim three times – twice at the Colombo Swimming Club – a nice outdoor pool set in the grounds close to the sea – but if I remember correctly with a train line in between! The second time I went there I joined a group afterwards for dinner on the veranda – lovely.
Another evening I was taken to a private primary school run by one of the teachers on my course. She told me they had a pool so I was expecting something like a small ten metre thing. We drove up into the suburbs and arrived at her school. I met her family, had some tea and then they asked me if I’d like to go for a swim – of course. I changed and then followed her husband up a dark alley and climbed through a small metal hatch. Facing me was a 25 metre pool with 8 lanes!!! I don’t have a photo of it yet, but I’ll try and get one – it was just so unexpected.
Salt and spray!
On the last evening I checked myself into one of my favourite hotels in the world – the Galle Face Hotel. This place has an amazing old wing with rooms more than 100 years old, pipes that clunk, wooden floors that creak and a swimming pool full of salt water right next to the ocean – heaven. 50 lengths in here and then a drink at the pool bar 🙂
